Nisqually, Puyallup, Squaxin, Steilacoom, and Muckleshoot. What could those words possibly be, what do they mean ? The more correct question would be, who were they?

Tribes that settled this part of Washington state thousands of years ago. They were the first settlers that did so due to the rich natural resources and abundant food resources.

The boom years began in 1873 when the Northern Pacific Railroad announced that it would locate in Tacoma. This sparked the city and surrounding areas to grow rapidly and become a regional leader.

The Great Depression was not kind to Tacoma, but soon after the New Deal began their recovery with military spending that allowed the establishment of Fort Lewis and many other government funded facilities. Then World War II came and went and the demands for shipyard work in the Port of Tacoma continued.

Tacoma having survived all the tribulations is now established on a rich foundation with a thriving technology industry and spreading prosperity that has caused Tacoma to be ranked among the top 30 regions in America’s Most Livable Communities in 2004 conducted by the Partners of Livable Communities.
